There is a "raging debate" over the energy efficiency of managed data centres, it has been claimed.
Addressing recent claims made by Google that it runs the world's greenest data centres, editor of DatacenterDynamics Focus Ambrose McNevin said the search engine has issued a direct challenge to the rest of the data warehousing industry.
Mr McNevin went on to say Google must be seen to be energy-efficient as it only exists through its managed data centres and people who change their online behaviour because of environmental concerns could affect the company's business.
"This is just one aspect of the huge debate raging over the topic of data centre energy use," he added.
"And it won't end with Google saying it runs the world’s most efficient data centres."
Earlier this week, Techworld.com reported a number of global firms are unaware of the return on investment provided by their managed data centres.
