UK firms could inadvertently make their IT more environmentally friendly by introducing greener facilities, such as managed data centre consolidation, in an attempt to cut costs, it has been claimed.
Michael Dean, group marketing manager at the National Computing Centre, said companies are more likely to review the hardware and software they are paying for and who is using it in the current financial climate.
"It is highly likely that many organisations will be able to identify underutilised assets and reduce their IT overheads. Whilst this isn't a green motive it will have a positive effect," he added.
Mr Dean went on to say bringing in greener IT facilities can save money in the long term but does require upfront investment.
Earlier this month, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reported that it has made use of virtualisation in its managed data centres, enabling the body to consolidate 120 servers down to 12.
