NHS Trust Networks are installing new managed firewalls, it has been revealed.
The Health Informatics Service (This) has brought in the system on behalf of several Southwest Yorkshire healthcare organisations, including Calderdale Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, NHS Wakefield District and Southwest Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust, which had not previously employed dedicated filtering solutions.
Steven Shaw, senior confidentiality and information management and technology security officer at This, said the system, provided by Optenet, allows staff to easily adjust without needing to reconfigure the entire solution across the network.
Javier Peralta, sales director for the IT security supplier in the UK, added: "In this age of increased focus on data protection, securing healthcare networks is not a luxury - it's critical to business operations, and IT managers need tools that are completely reliable."
Last week, ZDNet reported comments made by Graham Titterington, principal analyst at technology adviser Ovum, that organisations should increase their managed firewall provision in order to prevent attacks on the foundation layers of virtualised environments.
