What is MPLS? |
 | |
Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) government approved wide area networking standard. MPLS combines flexible any-to-any communication found on PSTN or Internet with the reliability and security delivered by Private Line, Frame Relay or ATM services. In addition, MPLS offers diferentiated performance levels and prioritisation of delay and non-delay sensitive traffic as well as voice and multimedia applications, all on a single network.
MPLS is available in three types

What are the benefits and disadvantages of MPLS? |
Depending on which type of MPLS you choose, each has its relative pros and cons. A general summary follows.
| |
| Benefits of MPLS |
Disadvantages of MPLS |
Flexibility - easily deploy new applications on your network to support your chaning business needs |
Layer 2 point-to-point tends to only be for higher bandwidth circuits [10Mbps and above] |
A cost effective and flexible alternative to high bandwidth leased lines
Layer 3 IP/VPNs are proprietary; one provider;
one network |
Same service guarantees as Frame Relay or ATM without Fast deployment |
Layer 2 VPLS are not yet rolled out globally, so
any-to-any feature of Layer 3 IP/VPN is not yet fully functional with one provider |
No longer necessary to manage complex routing tables |
Supports Class of Service [CoS] and Quality of Service [QoS] for service differentiation |
National / global availability. Available in over 70 countries. |

Cost of MPLS networks? |
 | |
The investment required to install an MPLS network will depend upon a number of variables; how many sites; geographical locations; bandwidth, CoS and QoS requirements; are to name but a few. However, because MPLS allows service providers to create new virtual private networks without having to install new hardware, it significantly reduces the cost of implementation, which in turn reduces the overall cost of VPNs. |

The value to me was OneStopClick's quick identification of the player's in the market who we should be talking to. The introductions were well received and I liked the market intelligence on each vendor. Highly recommended.
